Overview

Burien spans from it's downtown great shops to affordable (yet convenient) neighborhood communities and on out to the "Gold Coast" of Puget Sound. The town offers spectacular views, with wooded hills rising above Puget Sound. Early settlers came in the late 1800s and the town was established during the early 1900s, officially incorporated in 1993. It has a current population of around 32,000 people. Burien is located 10 miles south of downtown Seattle, with an easy and low traffic commute on Highway 509. Downtown Burien offers full local services, department and discount stores, a great variety of locally owned specialty shops, a wide variety of restaurants, and “Olde Burien’s" quaint shops. Highline Community Hospital is a fixture of the area. The huge Southcenter Mall and surrounding stores are just 15 minutes east, in the valley at Tukwila.

The Burien Library is a fine example of the expansive King County library facilities to be found in most communities. Other local organizations include the Burien Arts Gallery, the Performing Arts Center, Burien Little Theater, Seahurst Workshop Gallery, Highline Historical Society, the Community Computer Center (to assist local citizens with computer skills). Many people are involved in the support of hospitals and other service or charitable organizations, and they actively participate in local government, schools, and children’s athletics.

Neighborhoods

Burien’s pioneer era dock at Three Tree Point created a demand for early summer cabins and country houses along the Puget Sound shoreline, many of which survive today: some quaint, some grand, some vastly expanded and modernized. Seahurst has charming homes of the 1920s and 1930s. Shorewood is more from the '40s, '50s, and '60s, Gregory Heights represents the 1950s and '60s. Newer neighborhoods and individual custom homes are interspersed, most on wooded sites, many with spectacular views. The adventuresome can find homes at the water's edge, reached by tram and trail. There are areas appropriate to every price range. The combination of convenience, access to Seattle, and affordability is difficult to match elsewhere in the Puget Sound area.

Schools

Highline Public Schools are available throughout Burien and include significant new construction of modern schools and facilities. They are augmented by parochial schools including St. Francis and St. Bernadette Elementary Schools, and also John F. Kennedy High School. Seattle Christian School and Highline Community College are nearby.

Parks and Recreation

Seahurst Park offers wooded trails, sunny beaches, picnic shelters, and quiet benches to enjoy the ever-changing views of glistening mountains, brilliant sunsets, islands, sailboat races, power craft, ferries, tugboats, and huge cargo vessels. Other nearby recreational sites offer ball diamonds, recreation community centers, skateboard park, miles of paved trails along the Green river, pocket parks scattered throughout the town, and the brand new Eagle Landing Park complete with eagle's nest and a nature trail.
