Overview
Normandy Park is located on rolling wooded slopes along the eastern shore of Puget Sound, with 14,410 ft Mt. Rainier providing a striking backdrop to the southeast. Originally established in the 1930s as an elegant waterfront community, the earliest homes reflected French Normandy architectural styling.
The community incorporated in 1953 to provide home rule and to protect the established character of the area. The population is just over 6300 people. There are two excellent shopping centers in town, with additional shopping 10 minutes away in Burien and Des Moines. It is an easy commute of 12 miles to downtown Seattle via Highway 509.
Neighborhoods
Normandy Park neighborhoods offer views, waterfront, and terrain crossed by streams and wooded ravines, all creating many meandering tree-lined lanes leading to hidden spots of beauty in nature. Sites are larger than many other areas and homes are generally custom built, many having been built during the town's early years or the booming 1950s and 60s. Since the early 1990s Normandy Province and Normandy Sunset have been developed, creating about 70 new homes of elegant stature in planned neighborhood with covenants. Residents enjoy the nature, privacy, and high quality neighborhoods that Normandy Park offers.
Schools
Highline Public Schools include the famous Marvista Elementary, which is actively supported and enhanced by parents' efforts. The students achieve excellent test scores and it is one of the best schools in the state. Mt. Rainier high school offers 25 International Baccalaureate classes in 10 subjects. Seattle Christian school, Kennedy Parochial high school and Highline Community College are also nearby.
Parks and Recreation
In 1929, the developers of Normandy Park set aside land with 600 feet of beachfront to serve as a community center for the residents, and they built a grand French Normandy style clubhouse. All homeowners within certain boundaries of the town have equal and undivided rights in Lot “A”. Since then, a modern “Cove” clubhouse has been constructed, and this is the gathering place for community events. It is also available for private receptions, charity luncheons, etc. The 17 acre grounds include picnic and play areas, tennis courts, paths, ponds, a large play field, and the beach with tidelands.
Additional parks include City Hall Park & Recreation Center, Nature Trails Park, Marvista Park, and the heavily wooded Marine View Park with terrific views and an energetic hike to the beach. Many families and youths enjoy lessons and competitions at the two private swim clubs. The Des Moines Marina and boat harbor is about 10 minutes to the south.
